Giggling could be heard from upstairs. Seafayra and Valerie were in full sleepover mode and painting each others nails. Sea’s Aunt Flo had just been up to drop off more chips and sodas.
“So,” Valerie began, “Tell me more about this boy from today. Tell me everything and don’t leave a detail out!”
Seafayra looked off in the distance and thought before answering. “Its going to sound crazy but I think I know him.” And she told Valerie the story of her best friend who went missing years ago and was never found. Valerie looked thoughtful for a minute.
“I suppose,” Valerie began but was interrupted by the doorbell. She looked quizzically at Sea. “Expecting more for the sleepover?”
Sea shook her head. “Let’s go see who it is this late.”
When the girls made it downstairs they stopped dead in their tracks and just stared.
Josh was standing in the foyer. Behind him stood a man with short brown hair, brown eyes and with the look of a professor. Aunt Flo stood in the kitchen doorway.
“Girls,” Aunt Flo began. “We have something of great importance to tell you. Josh already knows. This man is Josh’s adopted father, Caleb. Listen closely to what he has to say.”
The man named Caleb cleared his throat as Josh made his way over to stand beside the girls. “This is going to sound foolish so I’ll just come right out and say it. Valerie you are the descendent of wood nymphs and Seafayra you are a pixie.”
The girls just stared at him openmouthed. “Yeah, and Sea’s Aunt Flo’s a witch.” Snickered Valerie.
“Actually, ” Responded Caleb, “She is a witch. ”
“Seafayra, doesn’t Josh look familiar to you?” Flo asked quietly.
Seafayra looked at him again. It couldn’t be him after all this time. It just couldn’t be. But a part of her knew it was. It was Nukea after all these years. Seafayra nodded at Flo almost in a daze.
“What is Josh if I’m a woodland nymph and Sea’s a mage?” Valerie asked Caleb.
“Josh is a dragon mage.” Caleb said quietly. “They are rare to come by. He is lucky to be such a man but if people find out, they will attempt to use him for their own personal gain.”
Seafayra kind of tuned everyone out. She had eyes only for Josh. She just couldn’t believe it. He was here. She uttered a kind of croak and ran back upstairs. When she got to her bedroom she closed the door and fell onto her bed. She had the cold sweats. What exactly was going on here anyway? A knock on the door sat her up. Her Aunt Flo was standing in the doorway.
“Honey,” Her Aunt Flo began. ” We didn’t mean to upset you.”
“What exactly is going on Aunt Flo?”
Flo sat on the edge of her bed. “There is a war going on the kingdoms. You three were chosen by the elders to fight a man who calls himself Medianoche. Your training begins tomorrow. ”
“But what….” Seafayra began.
Flo cut her off. “Tomorrow you will know everything. Tonight just rest and prepare yourself mentally. Tomorrow you will find the truth. ” With that she stood up and left the room. Seafayra still didn’t quite understand what was going on but she was at least willing to find out tomorrow.
